What Is PPB in Hydrogen Water — And Why Does It Matter?

If you've been researching hydrogen water bottles, you've seen the acronym PPB everywhere. Brands compete on it. Marketing leans on it. But most buyers don't actually know what it means — or why it's the most important number to understand before buying. Here's the full picture.

What Does PPB Stand For?

PPB stands for parts per billion. It's the unit used to measure the concentration of dissolved molecular hydrogen (H₂) in water. One PPB means one part of hydrogen for every billion parts of water.

It sounds tiny — and it is by volume. But molecular hydrogen is the smallest molecule in existence, and at even low concentrations it is biologically active. The question is: how much is enough to actually do something?

What PPB Level Is Considered Effective?

The clinical research consistently points to concentrations of 1,000 PPB (1 ppm) and above as the range where measurable effects are observed in human studies. [1] Studies showing benefits for oxidative stress, inflammation, athletic recovery, and metabolic health have predominantly used water in the 1,000–3,000 PPB range.

Higher concentrations — in the 3,000–4,000 PPB range — represent the upper end of what quality SPE/PEM electrolysis technology consistently produces and are considered premium output. The Hydrotech bottle produces 3,800 PPB — independently verified by Guangdong Quantum third-party laboratory testing. This places it at the upper tier of any hydrogen water bottle available in the NZ and AU market.

Why Does PPB Vary Between Bottles?

Several factors affect how much hydrogen a bottle actually dissolves into water:

Electrolysis technology — SPE/PEM is the gold standard. Cheaper electrolysis methods produce less hydrogen and can introduce unwanted byproducts including ozone and chlorine. The Hydrotech bottle uses SPE/PEM, which is why it achieves 3,800 PPB consistently.

Electrode quality — Platinum-coated titanium plates are required for efficient, clean hydrogen production. Cheaper materials degrade faster and reduce output over time. Hydrotech uses quality-grade electrode materials and backs this with a 12-month warranty.

Cycle time — Most bottles offer a 3-minute and 5-minute cycle. Longer cycles produce higher concentrations. For maximum PPB, use the 5-minute cycle, particularly around meals or exercise.

Water temperature and mineral content — Cold water holds dissolved gas better than warm. Filtered or low-mineral water typically produces slightly higher output than hard tap water.

The Problem With Self-Reported PPB Claims

Here's the critical issue: any brand can print any PPB number on their packaging. There is no regulatory requirement in New Zealand or Australia requiring independent verification before going to market.

The market — particularly through overseas platforms — is full of devices claiming 3,000 PPB, 5,000 PPB, even 8,000 PPB, with no independent laboratory testing to back those numbers. Many are the same OEM device rebranded under different names with inflated claims.

One Hydrotech customer who had tried multiple brands before switching described this exactly: "It's not cheap, that's because it works. Other brands are terrible, trust me — I had 3 different ones and I wish I had just saved my money and bought this one in the first place." — I. Rai, verified customer

And another: "I have had a bottle previously from another source but your Hydrotech bottle beats them hands down. I realise now that my previous one was not living up to what they were promising." — Glenda J., verified customer

Why 3,800 PPB Matters in Practice

At 3,800 PPB, you're drinking water with nearly four times the minimum concentration associated with therapeutic effects in clinical literature. That's not a marginal difference from a 1,200 PPB bottle — it's a meaningfully higher dose of dissolved molecular hydrogen per glass.

For someone drinking hydrogen water daily for energy, recovery, or oxidative stress reduction, the difference between a verified 3,800 PPB and an unverified 1,500 PPB claim is significant — both in the quality of the number itself, and in what the body is actually receiving.

What to Look For When Comparing Bottles

Two questions cut through every PPB claim:

  1. Who tested it? — The brand, or an independent third-party laboratory?
  2. Is the certificate publicly available? — A brand with nothing to hide makes its test documentation visible.

Hydrotech's Guangdong Quantum certification and RoHS certificate are both available to view on the product page. That's the standard every hydrogen water bottle brand should be held to.
